Funeral services for A. L. Peterson, prominent, longtime citizen of Postville, were held in the Community Presbyterian Church, Postville, Tuesday, October 10, 1972, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Dick Harberts officiating. Mr. Peterson died suddenly at his home Friday evening, October 6, 1972.

Alonzo Lowe Peterson, son of Charles F. and Mary Lowe Peterson, was born August 14, 1879 at Clarion, Iowa. He spent his childhood in the Clarion community where he completed his schooling. In 1898, Mr. Peterson, then 18, answered President McKinley's call and volunteered for service in the Spanish-American war. He returned from service in Cuba to graduate from Grinnell college in 1901. Upon graduation he was offered a job with Harris Bank and Trust Co. in Chicago but declined.

Mr. Peterson was united in marriage to Ednah McConnell of Spencer, August 9, 1905. The couple settled at Centuria, Wisconsin, where he was employed in a bank from 1905 until 1911. Since 1911 he has made his home in Postville. Mr. Peterson was a cashier for the Postville State Bank for 26 years. In 1935, he joined the staff of Hall Roberts & Son and has served as controller and treasurer. He remained active until his death.

Mr. Peterson was very active in civic affairs. He served two terms on the Postville Board of Education and for 30 years was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Postville Memorial Hospital. He was an active member of the Community Presbyterian Church where he was treasurer for 48 years. Mr. Peterson was a 50 year member of the Masons and also a member of the VFW at Yankton, South Dakota.

The Petersons were the parents of six children. Surviving are his five sons: Charles M. of Wilton Junction; Richard F. of Cedar Rapids; Donald R. of Des Moines; Duane C. of Chicago, Illinois, and Roland E. of Yankton, South Dakota; 13 grandchildren, 16 great grand-children, many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Ednah on May 7, 1936, one daughter, Aileen Dolores in 1927; two sisters, Mrs. Wallace (Vera) Nesbit and Mrs. Roy (Florence) Sherer and a brother Norris Peterson.

Interment was in the Postville Cemetery
