Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at the Schutte Funeral Home for Mrs. Amanda Phillips with Rev. Walter T. Martin officiating. Mrs. Phillips passed away on Monday afternoon, February 6, 1950 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Walter Falb at Elgin.

Amanda Meier, daughter of C. W. and Louisa Meier, was born on April 25, 1876 at National. In her girlhood the family moved to a farm northeast of Postville where she attended West Grove School. On September 25, 1894 she was married to Alonzo Phillips and they came to Postville to make their home. Four daughters and one son were born to this union: Ethel, who died in 1903; Mrs. Winifred Sullivan, Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Walter Falb, Elgin; Mrs. Wolfern Baylor, Elgin, Illinois; and Harold Phillips, Dixon, Illinois.

She spent her entire life in this community and for the past 13 years she and her sister, Irene, have made their home together. She was first of all a homemaker and possessed the rare gift of hospitality. She was an understanding mother and faithful friend. As long as she was able, she took an active part in all the affairs of the community. She was a staunch supporter of all school projects, a member of the Community Presbyterian Church, Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star and the First Noble Grand of the Rebekah Lodge.

Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her husband, who died June 27, 1936; a daughter, Ethel; three brothers, Wilbur, Chris and George Meier; and a sister, Mrs. Frank Eaton.

She leaves to mourn her death her four children, one sister, five grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
