Iowa Farm Leader Dies

Waukon, Ia. (Special)-Benjamin D. Helming, 78, prominent Allamakeee County agricultural leader, died at a Rochester, Minn., hospital early Thursday following an operation.

Helming served as president of the Allamakee County Agricultural Society for many years, retiring from the post last year due to poor health.

Helming was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Simon Helming, pioneer settlers in Allamakee County, and was born in Union Prairie Township Jan. 29, 1874.

He moved to Waukon shortly after his marriage to Winifred May, who died several years ago.

Surviving are three daughters, Carolyn, De Kalb Ill.; Dorothy, Iron Mountain, Mich.; and Mrs Frank (Marian) Tims, Antwerp, N.Y.; three sons, Benjamin, Quincy Ill.; Dr. Robert Helming, Cresco, Ia.; and John, Cedar Rapids. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Albert Steffen and Mrs. John C. Ludeking, Waukon and Clara of New York, N.Y. Martin Brothers of Waukon are in charge of funeral arrangements which are not yet complete.
