Funeral services were held at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on Tuesday, January 15, 1952, for Miss Violet Caroline Read, 60, a former resident of this community.

Miss Read was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Read of Postville and Forest Mills. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Rosamond Olney of Omaha, Nebraska and Mrs. Earl Krousie of New York City.

Following are excerpts of the obituary appearing in the Daily Oklahoman:

Death Friday ended the long and faithful record of Miss Violet Caroline Read. Shields Heights sixth grade teacher who had never had an "onery brat" in her class in her 18 years at the school.

A rare teacher who always saw the good side of her students, she paraphrased Will Rogers frequently with her favorite expression -- "I never saw a pupil I didn't like."

Miss Read died Friday at 60 in St. Anthony hospital where she had been hospitalized since October 31. Although in ill health, she started teaching this term, but was forced to quit late in October.

She was born near Postville, Iowa, and received her early education in Allamakee county and at Waukon, Iowa.

For 12 years, Miss Read taught in Iowa rural, town and city schools. In 1926, she earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa and the following year she came to Oklahoma City to teach at Woodrow Wilson.

She taught there six years before transferring to Shields Heights. In 1931, she was awarded a master's degree from the University of Oklahoma.
