Memorial services were held May 28, 1971 at Greenwood Memorial Park, Phoenix, Arizona with interment at West Union Cemetery, West Union, Iowa June 18 for Herman Frederick Schara who died May 27 at Holbrook Hospital, Holbrook, Arizona.

Herman Frederick Schara, son of Karl and Wilhemina Sass Schara, was born January 5, 1898, on a farm near Castalia, Winneshiek County, Iowa.

In his early years he was stricken with deafness caused by a severe childhood disease. His early childhood was spent in the Castalia rural area, and he attended both rural school and Castalia town school until the fifth grade. At about age ten, he went to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where he was enrolled in a special school for the deaf. His education was completed at Council Bluffs, where he also learned his life-long trade of cobbler. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Castalia, Iowa.

On October 26, 1921, he was united in marriage with Ada Mary Granger, at the Lutheran Church in Castalia. Three daughters were born to this union: Mary Jean, who died in 1934 at the age of twelve, Virginia (Mrs. William Youngberg) of Yucca Valley, California, and Patricia (Mrs. Kenneth Hutzel) of Holbrook, Arizona.

Although Mr. Schara practiced his trade in several communities of northeastern Iowa, most of his adult married life was spent in West Union, where his reputation and skill at shoe repair resulted in a successful business until his retirement in July of 1969. At this time he moved to Holbrook, Arizona, to make his home with his daughter, Patricia.

He was preceded in death by his parents: one brother, Fred; one sister, Bertha; and one brother and two sisters who died in infancy. He is survived by his wife, Ada, two daughters, Virginia and Patricia; one granddaughter, Kay, who made her home with them until her marriage; six other grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers, William, of Racine, Wisconsin, and Albert, of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin; two sisters, Lena (Mrs. Eugene Perry) and Anna (Mrs. Leonard Casten) both of Postville, Iowa.
