Jessie Scott Howes was born in Melrose, Scotland on February 16, 1884, the daughter of George and Mary (Allison) Scott. Her parents both died in the diphtheria epidemic of 1887 and Jessie and her brother, William were brought to this country to be raised by an aunt and uncle in Minnesota.
Following completion of her education in the Felton, Minnesota schools she moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada where she attended Business College and was employed by the T. Eaton Co.
She was married to Frank A. Howes on August 14, 1907 and lived in several cities in Missouri and Iowa before settling on the Howes farm north of Waukon in 1920. She moved back to Waukon in 1950.
Jessie was a member of Eastern Star, First Presbyterian Church and the Women's Association of the Presbyterian Church, Waukon, Iowa.
Mr. and Mrs. Howes transferred the church membership from the Presbyterian Church, Council Bluffs, Iowa to the First Presbyterian Church, Waukon, Iowa on July 20, 1920, and both remained members until their call from this life. It made her very happy in 1975 when she was made an honorary member of the Program Agency of the United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America.
She is survived by her daughter, Jessie Louise Anderson of Cedar Rapids, IA and two sons, Francis A. Howes of Waukon and John C. Howes of Charleston, West Virginia. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Preceding her in death were her husband, her son, Albert S. Howes, her brother, William Scott, 1 grandson and twin great-granddaughters.
Jessie loved people of all ages and was known for her love of plants and animals, both of which flourished under her touch. She had an active mind and kept abreast of current events until her death on July 26, 1978 at the age of 94 years.
