William H. Schroeder Rites Held Thursday

William Henry Schroeder, a respected and long time resident of this city, passed away at his home in Postville, Monday, February 10, 1936, at the age of 76 years, 10 months and 19 days.

He was born at Tweehausen, Germany, on March 23rd, 1859. In infancy he was baptized in the Lutheran church of that city, where in 1873, by the rite of confirmation, he became a communicant member of the church.

In 1882 he emigrated to America and settled in the vicinity of Postville.

On September 25, 1884, he was united in marriage to Doretta Wilhelmina Loeffler. This union was blessed with six children, one of whom preceded him in death, as did also his wife, who passed away November 23, 1907.

He was again married in November, 1908, to Wilhelmina Albertina Wendt, who passed away June 16, 1935.

In the year 1916 he retired from farming and moved to Postville where he lived until his departure. Since the passing of his wife last summer he has been faithfully cared for by his granddaughter, Mrs. Verla Strien.

He was a good husband and father, a kind neighbor and friend, and a good citizen, respected by all who knew him.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church of Postville and while his health permitted was a regular attendant upon its services.

He leaves to mourn his passing two sons, Louis F. and Edward F. Schroeder, both of Postville; and three daughters, Mrs. Jennie Schara and Mrs. Amanda Kohrs, of Postville; and Mrs. Ella Monroe of Castalia; also 26 grandchildren and five great-grand-children; also one brother, Christian, of Marshfield, Wisconsin; two half-sisters, Mrs. Minnie Brainard of Luana and Mrs. Mary Harnack of Castalia; two half-brothers, Henry W. of Postville and Louis of Williamsburg, to each of whom is extended the tenderest sympathy of many friends.

The funeral was held from St. Paul's Lutheran church in this city on Thursday, February 13, 1936, at 1:30 p.m., Dr. R. B. Garten officiating. Interment was made in the Postville cemetery.

Note: William's parents were Ludwig Schroeder and Wilhelmina Wernhardt.
