Herman Fredrick Schutta

Herman Frederick Schutta was born on April 11, 1885, the son of Frederick Schutta and his wife Marie Hoth Schutta. He passed away at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota on September 20, 1958, at the age of 73 years, five months and nine days. He had been a patient at the hospital for a week, having suffered a heart attack while undergoing a clinical examination the preceding week.

He was baptized in St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Monona on May 24, 1885, and was confirmed in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Postville on March 26, 1899. He was married to Sevena Sawvelle on September 4, 1918.

Mr. and Mrs. Schutta celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on September 4 this year. One son, Durwood, was born to this union.

Mr. Schutta worked with the Hoth Haymower Co. in Postville for many years, and moved to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin with the firm in 1930. He moved back to Postville in 1936 and worked with the Postville Lumber Co. for two years. He served as a custodian in the Postville Public Schools for 16 years, retiring several years ago. He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge in Postville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, William Schutta of Postville, and a half brother, Charles Hoth.

He is survived by his wife, his son, Durwood of Postville, one brother, John Schutta of Frankville, and a half-sister, Mrs. Herman Gipp of Ossian, a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 on Tuesday afternoon at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Postville, with the Rev. Charles E. Witt, pastor officiating.

Burial was in the Postville cemetery.
