George A. Waters passed sway at his home in Waukon, Iowa on Sunday morning, Aug. 20, at the age of 90 years and 26 days. His death followed a short illness brought on by the many infirmities of old age.
George A. was the son of pioneer parents, Robert and Sarah McCann Waters, and was born on the Waters homestead in Ludlow township, Allamakee county, Iowa, July 24, 1860.
Mr. Waters led an active and varied life of work. In 1883 he went to Kimball, S. D., and there preempted a homestead of his own. He returned to Iowa in February, 1885, and on Feb. 11, was united in marriage to Martha Jaques. To this union, two sons were born Robert J. now living in Waukon and Ralph D., who lost his life in France in World war I. In 1888, Mr. and Mrs. Waters moved back to a farm near McIntire, Iowa, where Mrs. Waters passed away.
On Sept 15, 1890, Mr. Waters was united in marriage with Emma {Emeline} J. Munson, who has been his constant companion for almost 60 years. Had he lived until Sept. 15, this year, they would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. To this union, three children were born: Ethel M., who died in infancy; Mark Hobert and Burrall D., both residing in Austin.
In 1893, he quite farming to enter into the hardware business under the firm name of Waters, Munson and Merrill.
In 1898, he went back to the farm for two years coming back to McIntire in 1900, where he took up the well-drilling, pump and windmill business.
In 1912, he purchased Sam Waters' homestead and farmed there until 1916, when he retired on account of his health moving to Waukon, which has been their home since.
Mr. Waters was a member of the Congregational church in McIntire; but, upon moving to Waukon, he changed his membership to the Presbyterian church where he served as elder for a number of years.
Mr. Waters' life was centered around his home and family. He never aspired to any public office.
Mr. Waters is the last member of his family, as he was preceded in death by all his sisters and brother.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, three sons, nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church in Waukon, Thursday afternoon, Aug. 24, with Rev. Walter T. Martin of Postville in charge. Frances Steffen sang two of George A.'s favorite songs, "nearer, Still Nearer" and "Abide With Me". She was accompanied by Delinda Roggensock.
Burial was in the Wayne cemetery, near McIntire, Iowa. Six grandsons bore the casket to the grave: George M. Waters, Guy M. Waters, Ralph H. Waters, Willard Clements, Darrel K. Waters, Raymond J. Waters. Eight of Mr. Waters' cousins and friends acted as honorary pallbearers: Chris Waters, Wallace Waters, Bert Waters, Ed Hass, Mike Mooney, Frank Dunning, Charley Regan, Carl Kolsrude. Mrs. Paul Bakke and Miss Geneva Waters were in charge of flowers.
