LAST CIVIL WAR VETERAN OF NEW ALBIN IS DEAD
New Albin, Iowa - John T. Robinson, the last of the civil war veterans of this place, died here Saturday morning, on the anniversary of his marriage, 61 years ago. His wife passed away three years ago.

Mr. Robinson was born in New York City, Feb. 1, 1841. He came west with his parents and sisters and brothers in 1851, locating in Allamakee county near Dorchester. He lived in this vicinity 79 years with the exception of three years during which he served in the civil war.

He enlisted in the war August 13, 1862, with Company B of Dorchester and was mustered into service Oct. 3, 1862, with the Twenty-seventh Iowa regiment. He was in 17 engagements and was mustered out of the service unwounded Aug. 8, 1865. He served as a sergeant under General Sherman in several engagements. Although he often saw General Grant he never actually served under him.

He was the earliest settler of the county and came to town of New Albin 56 years ago after the railroad went through. Only a few days before his last illness he told of being presented with two lots by A.J. Rhomberg, who laid out the town, as an inducement to settle and go into business here.

Three years before coming to New Albin he conducted a general store at Jefferson, Minn. Later he did contract work on the railroad and still later bought grain and livestock until 1917 when he retired.

He alone remembered the placing of the old historic iron post in 1852 which marks the boundary line between Iowa and Minnesota here. He was interested in any movement for public improvements and for 20 years was active in an effort to bring about the establishment of a historical park here.

He is survived by four children, Frank Robinson and Daisy Robinson of New Albin; Mrs. R.B. Geer, Chicago; and Mrs. E.W. Vanzow of Ada, Minn., besides three grandchildren, Edward, Hope and Francees Vanzow.

The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. A.B. Gable officiating, and interment will be made in the New Albin cemetery.
