A Memoriam and Mass of Christian Burial Service was held on Monday June 25, 2012 at the St. Ann-St. Joseph Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry, Iowa with burial in the St. Joseph Paint Rock Cemetery for Karen Louise Mathis, age 68, of Harpers Ferry, Iowa who died on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, Wisconsin.

Karen Louise Mathis was born on February 13, 1944 in Lansing, Iowa to Richard and Vernie (Rush) Stahl. She graduated from the Kee High School in Lansing where she enjoyed cheerleading. After high school she moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa and worked at Rockwell Collins. She was united in marriage to Gerald "Jerry" Mathis on September 18, 1965 at the St. Joseph's Paint Rock Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry, Iowa. She became very active in the church over the years, participating in the Rosary Society and was a Circle Leader. She also enjoyed working at Veterans Memorial Hospital the first few years of her marriage. Karen enjoyed gardening, canning and freezing their garden produce, reading, cooking and having family picnics. Jerry and Karen also loved spending time with friends at card club over the years. She packaged buttons for Blumenthal Lansing Company for the last ten years.

Karen is survived by her husband Gerald "Jerry" Mathis of Harpers Ferry; three children Julie (Wayne) Knight of Manchester, Iowa, Steve Mathis of Lansing, and Maryann (Jeff) Gramlich of Lansing; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; eight brothers and sisters Alice Strong of Cedar Rapids, Everett (Jean Ann) Stahl of Lansing, Lester (Betty) Stahl of Waukon, Iowa, Loretta Strong, Robert (Harriet) Stahl of Ham Lake, Minnesota, George Stahl of Lansing, Allen (Mabel) Stahl of Lansing, and Gary Stahl of Lansing; father-in-law Willis "Buster" Mathis of Waukon and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; mother-in-law Myrtle Mathis; one sister Jean (Stahl) Fahey; two brothers-in-law Merlin Strong and Norbert Strong; and two sisters-in-law Judy Stahl and Colleen (Mathis) Hart.
