Delbert "Bud" Mathis, age 92, of Waukon, Iowa died Saturday, January 1, 2005 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 4 at Saint Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Father Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial was in the Saint Joseph's Paint Rock Cemetery, rural Harpers Ferry, Iowa.

Delbert Joseph Mathis was born March 30, 1912 on the rural Lansing, Iowa farm of his parents Adolph and Nell (Burns) Mathis. He was baptized and confirmed at Saint Joseph's at Paint Rock Catholic Church and graduated from the Lansing High School in 1929 where he took the Normal Training course. Delbert did general trucking for several years and then operated a threshing ring with neighbors until combines took over the process.

On June 11, 1941 he married Ann Troendle at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing. They farmed together in rural Lansing for many years operating a dairy and raising beef cattle, hogs, and grain. Bud was particularly well known for the registered Angus cattle he raised. He also sold DeKalb seed for 19 years while he was farming. For many years he grew several acres of sweet corn and loved to visit with the people as he sold the sweet corn on his farm, Lansing, and Waukon. In 1986 Bud and Ann retired and moved to Waukon.

Bud was a member of Saint Patrick Catholic Church and had formerly been an active member of Saint Joseph's at Paint Rock Catholic Church. He served on the board of directors for Saint George School in Lansing. He was a member of the Catholic order of Foresters and the Allamakee County Cattleman and American Angus Associations. He enjoyed playing cards, throwing horse shoes, listening to music, reading about history, and keeping up with events in the local papers. Bud's favorite times were spent with his family and friends.

Delbert is survived by his wife Ann of Waukon; five sons, Cletus (Karen) and Daniel (Kathy), both of Waukon, Earl (Gail) of Robins, Iowa, Cyril (Shirley) of Buffalo City, Wisconsin, and John of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two daughters, Eloise (Glen) Reed of Lansing and Mary (Daren Kaeppel of West Union, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and a brother Willis "Buster" Mathis of Waukon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson Jason Kaeppel and twin granddaughters; three brothers, Ray, Everett, and Morris and a sister, Mary Louise Mathis. Honorary casketbearers were his granddaughters, Jenny Durham, Sara Mathis, Michele Pansegrau, Kim Schenck, Kristy Reed, and Jessica Mathis. Casketbearers were his grandsons, Jim, Mike, Vaughn, Eric and James Mathis, David Reed, and Brian and Chad Kaeppel.
