Gustave Russell

Gustave E. Russell died in Knoxville Feb. 12, 1986 at the age of 85. He was born in Hanover, Germany on May 11, 1900. He was the son of Richard and Agosta Opperman Russell. They moved to America from Germany in 1903.

Gustave was married to Julia Tollefson Oct. 23, 1922. They had 8 children.

Julia died on March 14, 1961

Gustave married Eleanor Smith on Sept. 23, 1961. She also preceded him in death in 1983.

Russell was also preceded in death by 2 infant sons.

He had been a farmer in the Postville area for a number of years.

He is survived by 5 daughters, Lois Russell, Norwalk, WI; Lillian Winters, Waukon; Gladys Little, Los Angeles, CA; Joyce Weber, Lansing; Mary Russell, Decorah; one son, Norman Russell of Troy Mills; one sister, Elsie Davies; a foster son, Bill Eddinger; 34 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his 3 step-sons, Roger Smith of West Des Moines and Larry and Calvin Smith of Knoxville, one step-daughter, Alice Kincaid, Knoxville and 10 step-grandchildren; as well as 2 step-great-grandchildren.

The WAUKON REPUBLICAN-STANDARD, February 18, 1986, gave his name as Gustave C. Russell, whereas the Postville Herald gave middle initial as "E".
