HIGHLY RESPECTED CITIZEN PASSES ON AT LOCAL HOSPICE

At about ten o'clock on Monday evening, January 23, 1928, the soul of Carl C. Schroeder, an old and highly respected citizen of this community, crossed over the bar. His death occurred at Postville Hospital, where for several weeks past he had been a patient, and brought a sweet release from pain to a wearied body that for months had been sore beset with physical affliction.

He was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, May 27, 1852, and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church of that city. Later he went to Hamburg, Germany, where on Nov. 24, 1876, he was united in marriage with Maria Mueller. In 1878 they came to America, landing in New York on July second of that year. They first located in Clayton county, Iowa, on a farm five miles southeast of Postville and in 1913 moved to the McWilliams farm a mile east of this city. To this union six children were born, three sons and three daughters, the wife and two daughters preceding him in death.

In 1920 Mr. Schroeder and his son Henry came to Postville, which has since been their home.

He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Anna Muchow of Hartford, S. D., and three sons, Otto, Henry, Carl, all of this city and locality, and three grandchildren, also by a brother, John Schroeder, also of this city.

Carl Schroeder was an honest, upright and industrious man, a good neighbor, friend and citizen, and was known and appreciated by a wide circle of friends, who will grieve to learn of his passing.

The funeral was held from St. Paul's Lutheran church in this city at one o'clock this afternoon, Rev. E. T. Finck conducting the service, and the large concourse of sympathizing friends in attendance and the many beautiful floral offerings all testified to the high esteem in which he was held in a community where his life was an open book to all. Interment in Postville cemetery.
