Elkader Register, Thur., 30 Mar. 1905. Postville column.
At 8:10 o'clock last evening the final summons came to Peter T. Smith, of this city, and released from its suffering the emaciated and pain-wracked body of one who for seventeen long years has suffered as few men are called upon to do. The immediate cause of his death was heart failure super-induced by an attack of lagrippe, with which he was attacked about ten days ago. Peter T. Smith was 55 years old November 21st last. He was first stricken with disease in the fall of 1888. In May of the following year he was compelled to resign his position as traveling agent for the Plano Mfg. Co., since when he has been unable to perform labor of any kind. In 1893 he was stricken blind, and for twelve years he has been unable to assist himself in any way. He was a man of strong personality and keen intellect and through all his suffering retained a bright mentality. He was a good citizen, kind husband and indulgent father, and an honored member of the Masonic fraternity, being at the time of his death a member of good standing in Brotherly Love Lodge No. 204 AF. & A.M., of Postville, and of Landridge Commandery of West Union.
