A Pioneer Mother of Waukon Called to Her Eternal Home

The community of Waukon, Iowa, and vicinity were saddened by the death of one of their most highly esteemed and revered pioneer mother, Mrs. Thomas Maroney*, aged 84 years, on July 7, 1928.

Deceased was born in County Carlow, Ireland, January 20, 1844. She came to America with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Fenelon, in 1860, settling in French Creek township. Her marriage to Mr. Thomas Maroney took place at the Lycurgus church, June 7, 1861. Their home life began in French Creek township, later moving to the parish of Waukon, Iowa, where Mrs. Maroney had been a devoted and active member of St. Patrick's Church since 1874.

The funeral services were held Monday morning at 10:30 A.M. A requiem High Mass was sung by Rev. T.R. Collins, Waverly, Iowa, assisted by Revs. J.C. Stuart and D. O'Sullivan. A most touching sermon was delivered by Rev. Fr. Stuart, pastor, who paid many beautiful and well deserved tributes to the deceased, exhorting the Christian mothers of this community to take her as their model.

Mrs. Maroney was one of Allamakee county's noblest women. She possessed many rare qualities, attracting all who came in contact with her, regardless of creed, by her remarkable gifts of kindness, gentle refinement, true piety and love of Church. She was loved by her family who mourn her loss, and tenderly respected by her neighbors and a multitude of friends.

An only sister, Mrs. James Holahan, Waukon, Iowa, and an exemplary family of ten children survive her, as follows: James Maroney, St. Paul, Minn.; Mrs. Margaret McClaskey, Minneapolis, Minn.; Miss Mary Maroney, Chicago, Ill.; John F. Maroney, Mason City, Iowa; Mrs. F.W. Boyd, Miss Bea Maroney, Sr. M. of St. Sylvester and Sister M. Elizabeth, Dubuque, Iowa; Misses Agnes and Teresa Maroney, Waukon, Iowa, all of whom were present at her death except Sr. M. of St. Sylvester.

A large cortege of relatives and friends, many of whom came from a distance, followed the remains to Mount Olivet cemetery where the deceased was laid to rest, beside her husband, Thomas Maroney, who died October 26, 1904, and one son Edmund and daughter Anna who preceded her in death.

Note: Her gravestone spells her surname as Moroney, rather than Maroney
