McGregor, Ia., Dec. 31 - James Shannon passed away Thursday night at his home at Yellow River, Allamakee county, after an illness of six months. He was 71 years of age and one of the last of the old-time river men.

He started working on the river when 13 years old and rose to be a mate and pilot. Among the steamboats on which he worked as mate were the "Silver Wave," "Musser," "Last Chance" and "Leclaire Belle".

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Mary, two daughters, Mrs. John Belfanz of Mason City, and Mrs. Robert Young of Yellow River, and two brothers, John of Chicago, and George of LeClaire, Ia.

The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon with interment in Spaulding cemetery.

~Dubuque Herald and Times-Journal, Sunday, January 1, 1928

Note: there is not an existing gravestone in the Spaulding cemetery for either James or his wife Mary - perhaps they never had one or it has been lost to time.
