Elkader Register, Fri., 3 Aug. 1883. From the Postville Review, undated.

On Saturday, the 21st ult., at Postville, occurred the suicide of Martin Broel, a half brother of Peter Broel, of this township. Of this the Postville Review says:

"He was boarding at Wm. Thoma's, and in the evening went to his room and became very noisy and fired two or three shots out of the window from a revolver which he had. Mr. Thoma was away at work on his farm and in the morning Mrs. Thoma sent for him. During Saturday he refused to leave his room at all, or to allow any one to enter it for some time. His was a clear case of insanity of the worst type.

About 4 o'clock in the afternoon Marshal Martson, being called upon, went to try and remove him. They finally succeed in getting him to open the door. He held a pistol in his hand while he talked incoherently to Mr. Thoma, and as soon as he saw the marshal, before he could be prevented he pulled the trigger and sent a 38 caliber bullet crashing through his brain, of course killing him instantly.

A coroner's jury was impanelled and gave a verdict in accordance with these facts. He was buried on Sunday morning in the Postville cemetery."
