WWII Vet Dies in Guam Following Wartime Duty
Warren G. Meyer was born in Jefferson Township, Houston County, Minnesota, June 14, 1924, to Walter and Hulda (Meiners) Meyer.
After graduating from New Albin High School, he worked on the family farm. In January 1944, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and reported to Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, CA, for Basic Training.
In June 1944, Warren was ordered to the Pacific arena in combat status. He participated in amphibious landings in the Western Pacific including the invasions of Palau and Pellilieu. His final wartime landing was in the final battle of the war in the Pacific, the invasion of Okinawa.
After WWII ended, Warren was assigned as a truck driver to a Marine transport battalion on the island of Guam. He reported to Guam in September 1945. In February 1946, his family was notified by telegram that he had died in the hospital in Guam February 5. At that time, he left behind his parents, two sisters, Melba and Phyllis, and two brothers, Gilman and Kenneth.
Pfc. Warren G. Meyer, USMC, is buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii.
