Clara Louise (Smerud) Baal, 61, of Madison, WI, died of cancer Tuesday, Sept. 6, 1994, at her home.

Born July 14, 1933, in Preston, MN, she was the youngest child of Oscar and Clara (Wild) Smerud of New Albin. She graduated from new Albin High School, attended St. Teresa's College in Winona, MN, and Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) in Cedar Falls. She worked as a secretary in Cedar Rapids, and Jan. 5, 1957, married Eugene Baal in New Albin.

For many years she worked with her husband, who is territory manager for Cenpeco Oil Company.

Surviving are her husband; three sons, Dennis, Allen and Keith, all of Madison; one daughter, Diane (Mrs. Michael) Olietti of Marietta, GA; one grandson; four sisters, Sara Smerud of Tomah, WI, Rose Mary Intlekofer of Fort Collins, CO, Evangeline McKenna of Clutier, and Margaretta (Mrs. Walter) Keenan of Waukon; and five brothers, Edmund, George and John Smerud, all of New Albin, Donald Smerud of Waukon, and Alfred Smerud of La Crosse, WI.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Madison. Burial was in Blooming Grove Cemetery in Madison.
