Eugene Thomas Hammel, 70, of Ontario, CA, and formerly of New Albin, died Oct. 2, 1991, at Inland Christian Home, Ontario. He had been a resident of the home since April 1990.

Gene was born June 29, 1921, in Iowa Township, a son of Louis and Mary (Kuntz) Hammel. He received his early education in the rural schools of Iowa Township, and later attended New Albin High School.

He was a veteran of World War II, having volunteered for service in Dec. 1943. He was inducted into service Jan. 1944, and was assigned to the 412th Fighter Group. He received his discharge May 1946.

Gene was united in marriage Jan. 3, 1946, to Lorel Schlum of North Hollywood, CA. He married Janet Bath on Aug. 4, 1956, in Pasadena, CA.

He lived his adult life in California, but returned to Iowa on numerous vacations to visit relatives and his childhood home.

He worked in the field of aviation, retiring in 1966. He was an aerospace supervisor for Lockheed Aircraft in Ontario.

He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, working with Troop No. 301. He was a member of St. George Catholic Church, Ontario.

Survivors include his wife, Janet; three sons, Rob Hammel of San Pedro, CA, Erik Hammel of Tahoe City, CA, and Kurt Hammel of Long Beach, CA; two daughters, Kristen Carson of Westminster, CA, and Karen Hammel of San Francisco, CA; a brother, Leo Hammel of Joshua, TX; four sisters, Lorraine Moericke of Williston, N.D., Rose Zoll of New Albin, Stacia Kavon of Plentywood, MT, and Mary Jacobs of Rockton, IL; and two grandsons.

Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, Frank Hammel.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 9, with Rev. Joseph Kroh, pastor of... [missing rest of article]
