NEW ALBIN FARMER DIES UNDER TRACTOR

Earl Hammell, 44, died of chest injuries at St. Francis Hospital, La Crosse, Wis., alte Wednesday afternoon after his tractor jack-knifed on his farm in Winnebago Township, Houston County, Minn., about 4:15 p.m.

Hammell, whose home farm was south of New Albin, was hauling baled straw on his Winnebago Township farm seven miles west of New Albin when he was pinned under his tractor. The load of bales also tipped.

Two of his daughters, Kathryn and Joyce, were with him, but were not involved in the accident. They summoned help from a neighbor, Junior Middendorf, who called an ambulance from New Albin, and assisted in getting Hammell to the hospital. He died a few minutes after he was admitted.

He was born April 24, 1924, at New Albin, to George Hammell Sr. and his wife, Elizabeth (Wall) Hammell. He lived in the area all his life, served on the New Albin school board, and was in other organizations. He married Eleanor Manning of Wexford, Iowa, Oct. 29, 1946.

Survivors are his wife; four sons, Gerald, 19, Jerome, 9, Philip, 7, and Ronald, 5, all at home; eight daughters, Mrs. Gene (Betty) Pohlman, Jefferson Township, Houston County, Minn., and Kathryn, 18, Joan, 17, Joyce, 15, Marian, 14, Marlene, 12, Rosella, 11, and Christine, 3, all at home; his father; three brothers, George Jr., Jefferson Township, James, Winnebago Township, and Lawrence, New Albin; and five sisters, Mrs. Joe (Alberta) Troendle, Lansing, Sister Georgia, La Crosse, Mrs. Ernest (Pauline) Blaskowski, Lewiston, Minn., Mrs. Lawrence (Esther) Walleser, Harpers Ferry, and Mrs. Robert (Anna) Collins, Waukon.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, New Albin, the Rev. Edgar Kolfenback officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
