DRIVER DIES AS HE BATTLES FLAMES IN BED OF HIS TRUCK

Glenn Beardmore, 55, Dorchester, died of an apparent heart attack near New Albin Monday afternoon while putting out a fire in the back of his pickup.

The Allamakee County Sheriff's Department said heat from a chainsaw apparently ignited some straw in the pickup bed while Beardmore was traveling on State Highway 26, about 3-1/2 miles south of New Albin about 2:45 p.m.

Beardmore was pronounced dead on arrival at Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon.

He was born Sept. 4, 1922 at Dorchester to Earl and Myrtle (Sadler) Beardmore. He married Rae Holthusen on Sept. 2, 1947 in Wahpeton, N.D.

He attended Iowa State University where he belonged to Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. He had farmed and belonged to the American Legion, having served with the military in World War II. He also was a member of Farm Bureau and was active in community affairs.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, George and James of Dorchester, John of Wahpeton; two daughters, Mrs. Larry (Barbara) White of Waukon, and Mrs. Steve (John) Malm of Janesville, Wis.; two grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Earl Beardmore of Dorchester; and four sisters, Mrs. Helen Mohwinkle and Mrs. Leon (Jane) Schoh of Dorchester, Mrs. Willard (Mae) Gustin of Blair, Neb., and Mrs. Myles (Ruby) Herman of Waukon.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Mount Hope Presbyterian Church, near Dorchester, with the Rev. James Parker officiating and with burial in the church cemetery.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home, Waukon.
