Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Fern Marie Templeton, age 88, formerly of Nevada City, California, died Monday, November 2, 2015 at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Home in Waverly, Iowa. Funeral services were held at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waverly, on Wednesday, November 4 with visitation for one hour prior to the services and burial in the church cemetery.The Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home of Waverly, Iowa was in charge of the arrangements.
Fern was born on February 10, 1927 in rural St. Olaf, Iowa, the daughter of Ralph and Alma (Christenson) Gunderson. She was baptized at the Norway Lutheran Church near St. Olaf on Easter Sunday, April 17, 1927 and on July 12, 1942 she was confirmed at the same church. Fern attended the Dry Run Country School through the 8th grade and for 2 years she attended the Elkader High School in Elkader, Iowa. Her last two years of high school were at Postville, Iowa where she graduated on May 10, 1944. Following her high school graduation she attended the American Institute of Business for nine months. Fern was united in marriage on October 13, 1962 with Bernard "Dink" Templeton at the Carmel-by-the-Sea Wedding Chapel at the Highlands Inn at Carmel, California. The couple made their home in San Bruno, California for several years before moving to Nevada City, California. Bernard and Fern purchased their home in Waverly, Iowa in 2000, moving to Waverly in 2001 after their home in California was sold. Bernard passed away on August 14, 2012. She was a member of the St.Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly.
Fern is survived by her two daughters, Cheryl Cretser of Sacramento, California and Mary (Kirt) Maxwell of Sebastopol, California; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Holm of Waverly and one brother, Dean (Clarian) Gunderson of Postville, Iowa and two sisters-in-law, Jan Gunderson of Fairbank, Iowa and Kay Gunderson of Postville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard; parents; son Jerry Garcia; two sisters, Ruby Torkelson and Doris Neidert; two brothers, Ralph Gunderson and Arnold Gunderson; and her brothers-in-law, Duane Holm, Quentin Torkelson, and Lloyd Neidert.
