Albert W. Vonderohe, 94, formerly of New Albin, Iowa, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at Thornton Manor, Lansing, Iowa, where he had been a resident for two and a half years.

He was born Oct. 28, 1906, in Union City Township, Allamakee County, Iowa, the 11th child to Henry J. and Emma (Bisping) Vonderohe. Albert attended Wheatland School through the eighth grade and then farmed the Vonderohe homestead with his brothers, Henry and Carl. On May 5, 1937, he married Martha Burmester. They continued to farm on the home stead until 1969, when they moved into New Albin.

In addition to farming, Albert also worked as a flagman during construction on township roads, and in the winter he was employed at Wiebke Fur Co. in Eitzen.

He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Wheatland, where he served on the church council and the cemetery board for 12 years. Albert also served on many committees in the community, including the County Fair Board.

After his retirement he enjoyed volunteer work at the senior citizens meal site and at Thornton Manor. He also enjoyed playing table games with his grandchildren and going fishing with his family.

Albert's faith was important to him, and he would often quote his confirmation verse which was Isaiah 43:1, "Fear not, for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name, thou art Mine."

Survivors include his wife, Martha of New Albin; a son, Rolland (Sue) of Lewiston, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Vonderohe of Waukon, Iowa; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Albert was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Roger; a granddaughter, Christine; five brothers; and five sisters.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at 2 p.m. from St. John's United Church of Christ, Wheatland. Rev. Paul Burgess will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the New Albin Townhouse and Chapel on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of service.

The Haugen-Roble-Jandt Funeral Home, Caledonia, is in charge of arrangements.
