Postville Herald, Wed., 9 Aug. 1950.

Funeral services were held Monday at 2:00 p.m. from the Schutte Funeral Home to St. Paul's Lutheran Church for John Henry Schultz, who passed away August 3 at the home of his nephew in Garnavillo. Rev. F. R. Ludwig, assisted by Rev. G. P. Reiff of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Garnavillo, were in charge of the service. Burial was in Postville Cemetery.

John Henry Schultz, son of Henry Schultz and Minnie Freitag Schultz, was born December 3, 1889, at Postville, and departed this life on August 3, at the home of his nephew and family, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Overbeck, at Garnavillo, aged 60 years.

Mr. Schultz was received into active membership in the Lutheran Church, also in St. Paul's congregation of Postville.

Mr. Schultz was graduated from the Postville high school and the Capital City Business College in Des Moines.

At age 20, while working as a clerk in the Luhman and Sanders Store in Postville, he was afflicted with poliomyelitis. But with courage, and never a word of complaint, he began to build a new life on crutches.

On December 5, 1914, following an apprenticeship in selling tickets under the late Henry J. Miller at Postville, Mr. Schultz began work as a ticket clerk for the Milwaukee Railroad at Austin, Minnesota, a position which he held for 35 years. In the spring of 1949 ill health forced him to retire and go to the home of his nephew, Donald Overbeck, at Garnavillo. He was taken to Mercy Hospital, Dubuque, where his trouble was diagnosed as brain tumor. After two months he was returned to Garnavillo, where he passed away last Thursday morning, August 3.

Left to mourn his passing are three brothers; Fred S. Bauder, Des Moines; Alfred Schultz, Postville, and Otto C. Schultz, Whittier, California; one sister, Mrs. Ben Overbeck, San Bruno, California, who has been with him the past year to assist her son, Donald and family, in his care; two nieces: Mrs. John Wistrick, San Bruno, California, and Mrs. Ed Meiners, Whittier, California: four nephews: Frederick Bauder, Des Moines, Donald J. Overbeck, Garnavillo, Frederick S. Overbeck, Millbrae, California, and Keith M. Overbeck, San Bruno, California.
