REGAN, SCHWARZHOFF, CURTIN, HOWERS, JONES, SULLIVAN

The Rev. James J. Regan, 34, biology instructor at Loras College, was drowned Saturday while swimming in a lake near Baltimore, Md., according to word reaching here Sunday. He was former assistant pastor of St. Mary's Church, Waverly, Ia., and the son of Charles Regan, Waukon, Ia.

Father Regan was on leave of absence from Loras College, and was taking post-graduate work at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, where he would have received his degree as doctor of philosophy in September.

The body will arrive at Prairie du Chien, Wis., Tuesday afternoon and will be taken to the home of his parents at Waukon, where friends may call after 7 o'clock Tuesday night.

Pontifical requiem mass will be held at St. Patrick's Church, Waukon, Thursday morning at 10 o'clock with the Most Rev. Francis J.L. Beckman, STD, Archbishop of Dubuque, officiating. Requiem mass was held in the chapel of St. Mary's Seminary, Baltimore, Monday morning. The Rev. John Howell, biology professor, Loras College, will officiate at a mass for Father Regan in the Loras College chapel Tuesday morning at 6:45 o'clock. Burial will be in the cemetery at Waukon.

Father Regan was born in Waukon, June 4, 1910. He attended St. Patrick's School, graduating in 1928.

He entered Loras College in 1929 and was awarded the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1933. He prepared for the priesthood at St. Mary's Seminary, Baltimore, and was ordained at St. Raphael's Cathedral in 1938.

He officiated at his first mass at his home church, St. Patrick's, Waukon, June 12, 1938. Ordained during the same ceremony at the Cathedral was the Rev. Edward P. Sullivan, Waukon, a life-long friend of Father Regan. Father Sullivan has been serving as a chaplain in the South Pacific for many months. He is now in New Guinea.

After ordination Father Regan was appointed assistant pastor of St. Mary's Church, Waverly, Ia., where he remained until June, 1939. He was appointed biology instructor at Loras College at that time and served for two years before obtaining leave of absence to attend Johns Hopkins University.

His death occurred while swimming with a group of Johns Hopkins students at a picnic.

Survivors include his father, four sisters, Mrs. Harold Schwarzhoff, Waukon, Mrs. Lawrence Curtin, Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Joseph Howers, Denver, Col., and Mrs. Lyle Jones, Sherman, Tex.; his grandmother, Mrs. Charles Regan, Sr., and his stepmother, Mrs. Charles Regan, Jr. He was preceded in death by his mother several years ago.
