LeRoy Schmidt

LeRoy Schmidt, 85, of Waukon, died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Center there following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 10, at 10:30 a.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with the Rev. Lynn Groe officiating.

Casket bearers were James Johnson, Rolf and Eric Richardson, and John, Jim and Jesse Klosterboer.

Burial was at the Oakland Cemetery. The Martin Funeral Home handled arrangements.

LeRoy Arthur Schmidt was born Aug. 18, 1913, in St. Olaf, the son Arthur and Lucy (Klinkenberg) Schmidt.

He attended St. Olaf Elementary School, Elkader High School and Junior College, and Iowa State University in Ames.

On May 16, 1934, he married Dorothy Walter at St. John's Lutheran Church in Farmersburg. LeRoy farmed in St. Olaf and then in Jefferson Township of Allamakee County, rural Waukon, for 30 years.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. LeRoy enjoyed singing and traveling in the United States and Europe. He also had his private pilot's license.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Waukon; 2 daughters, Patricia Richardson of Winfield, Ill., and Corine Schmidt of Manson, Wash.; 2 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchilddren.

LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Helen Johnson and a son-in-law, Dan Richardson.
