Harvey "Shorty" Hansmeier, 80, of Waukon, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at Good Samaritan Center in Postville following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Sunday, July 20 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon with Rev. Richard N. Eick officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted the family with arrangements.
Harvey Frank Hansmeier was born December 26, 1922, in Baxter, Iowa, the son of Benjamin Theodore and Elizabeth (Stock) Hansmeier. The family moved to Waukon, where he graduated from Waukon High School in 1940 and Waukon Junior College in 1942. During World War II, Shorty worked for Boeing Aircraft Co. in Seattle, Wash. He returned to Waukon where he did some farming and also sold DeLaval Dairy Equipment. Shorty was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and visiting with his friends.Survivors include two sisters, Ruth Nolting of Waukon and Leona (Kenneth) Bell of Plano, Texas; a brother, Marvin "Dick" Hansmeier of Waukon; a sister-in-law, Jean Hansmeier of Indianapolis, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ralph. Honorary casketbearers were Gordon and Marcella Hansmeier, Peggy Mathis, Jane Snitker, Glenda Bodensteiner, and Dave and Janet Snitker. Casketbearers were Ken Bell, Greg Hansmeier, and Milton, Charles, Larry, and Roger Nolting.
