Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon for Mrs. Mate Orr Welzel, 98, who passed away at the Good Samaritan Home in Waukon on December 01. The Rev. Walter T. Martin was in charge of the Rites. Order of the Eastern Star conducted services at the church. Burial was in Postville cemetery.
Mate Orr Welzel, oldest daughter of James and Margaret Ellison Orr, was born at their farm home northeast of Postville, November 03, 1862.
She attended Minert District School and Postville High School.
On June 03, 1886, she was married to Fred Welzel at the family homestead. Their home was in Postville. Their only child, Luverne, died in infancy in 1887. Her husband died on April 18, 1921.
Mrs. Mate Welzel was a charter member of Postville chapter no. 238, Order of the Eastern Star, and of Postville Monday Club.
She was a member of Congregational church in Postville and taught a Sunday School class in the primary department for 20 years. Later she became a member of the Presbyterian church.
Three brothers Ellison Orr of Waukon, Frank Orr of Monona, Darius Orr of Postville, and two sisters, Miss Olive Orr and Mrs. Jennie Orr Leui of Postville preceded her in death. One sister, Mrs. Carrie Cornell, lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with her son, Harvey Cornell.
In November, 1956, Mrs. Welzel was compelled to leave her cottage because of infirmities and be cared for in the Erbe Nursing Home. When the Erbe Home closed in August, 1960, she was transferred to the Good Samaritan Home in Waukon, where she died December 01, 1960, at the age of 98 years.
