Elgin Echo, Thursday, 17 April 1902.
A shocking accident, resulting in the instant death of John Trayer, Jr., occurred on the islands north of Lansing Wednesday of last week. He had gone out the day before with Carl Rachor intending to camp at Bakewell's shanty and clam in the sloughs near there. A gun was taken along and as usual in such cases it proved to be loaded. The weapon was standing against a crotch of a tree and in attempting to shoot a black bird before going to work Trayer pulled the gun towards him and the contents of one barrel was discharged, striking him on the left side of the head, near the ear, and coming out above the right eye. Death was instantaneous.
