IONA KERNAN
Iona M. Kernan, 80, of Prairie du chien, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002 at her home.

She was born Nov. 23, 1921 in Prairie du Chien, daughter of Raymond and Mary (Gokey) Coorough. She married John Kernan on May 3, 1943 at st Gabriel's Church in Prairie du Chien. She and John enjoyed nearly 60 years together.

"Onie" grew up in the 4th Ward Disctrict of Prairie du Chien and attended St Gabriel's and Prairie du Chien High School. She and John moved to Minneapolis area where their family was raised. They later moved to Yakima, Wash. and in 1993 returned to Prairie du Chien to be near family and friends. Onie loved music and dancing. She excelled at needle work and was appreciated for the many handmade quilts.

Surviving are her husband John of Prairie du Chien, two daughters, Mary Kay Kernan (Peg Thompson) of Afton, Minn. and Maureen Ness of St Francis, Minn.; three sons, John Jr. (Jean) of Halstead, Pa., Mark (JoAnn) of Beaver Dam, and Kevin (Sandy) of Coon Rapids, Minn; two sisters, Lois (Jasper) Harwood and Mary Lou (Richard) Obmascher both of Prairie du Chien; a brother Gerald "Jum" (Dorie) Coorough of Prairie du Chien; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Raymond and LeRoy and a sister Sally Stevens.

A Mass of christian burial will be Wednesday, at 10:30 a.m. at St Gabriel's Catholic church in Prairie du Chien, Rev. John Wambach, S.J. officiating, with burial in the Wexford cemetery in rural Lansing, Iowa. friends may call Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du chien, where there will ba a rosary at 4 p.m. and a wake scripture at 7:30 p.m.
