Carl Beall

Carl E. Beall, 94, of Waukon died Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at his home in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, May 20 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Pastor Samantha Houser officiating. Burial with military honors was held in Rossville Cemetery. Martin Funeral Homes assisted the family with the arrangements.

Carl Edward Beall was born September 26, 1918 in Franklin Township, rural Luana, on the farm of his parents, Louis E. and Minnie (Fish) Beall. Carl was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. He attended Jefferson country schools #4 and #8. After completing the 8th grade, Carl did farm work for various people and then was drafted into the United States Army, serving in the 113th Calvary during WW II; he saw action in Northern Europe.

While stationed at Camp Bowie in Brownwood, TX, Carl married Gladys Ellen Bechtel on December 25, 1942.

After the service, he returned home to Waukon and worked with Herman Electric doing wiring on several REC projects and as a mechanic with Dundee Implement for several winters. Carl then became a salesman for Watkins Products, retiring after 48 years. Carl later worked at MFL schools as a custodian.

He was a lifelong member of Zion UCC and also was a member of the Waukon VFW since 1946. He was a drummer for the Hillbilly Rhythm Boys Band for 12 years. Carl loved traveling with Gladys in their trailer across the U.S. and spending winter in the south. Carl and Gladys loved to dance. They also enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and coffee time with friends.

Carl is survived by his daughter, Connie (Boyd) Colby of Hiawatha; grandson, Jeff (Susy) Colby of Cedar Rapids; and two great-grandchildren, Caleb and Connor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gladys, who died in 2002; and four sisters, Hazel McGinnis, Beulah Haury, and infant twins Marin and Dorothy.

Casket bearers were Dale and Curtis Kurth, Wayne Fish, Jim McGinnis, Ed Haury and Verle Fish.
