Postville Herald, Thur., 3 May 1923.

Charles Thies, son of Fredrick Thies and Mary Teusen, was born in 1851 at Loisow, Mecklenburg - Schwerin, Germany. There he was baptized and confirmed. He emigrated to America in 1868 at the age of 18 years. In 1875 he was married to Lena Meyer, and the first four years of their wedded life was spent at Elkport, Iowa, They then came to a farm near Postville, and continued to reside in Clayton county until six years ago, when they retired from the farm and came to make their home in Postville, where Mr. Thies lived until he was called to his eternal home at nine o'clock on the evening of his birthday, April 28, 1893, at the age of 72 years, and his soul passed on to again join with that of his beloved wife who was called home five years ago.

A beloved father of his children, a faithful member of St. Paul's Lutheran church has been called to his heavenly home. Mr. Thies was respected by all who knew him as an honest and upright man in all his dealings.

"Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth; yea, saith the spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them."- Rev. 14:13.

He leaves to mourn his death the following children: Mrs. Fred Wilke, Postville; Mrs. Wm. Landt, Luana; George Thies, Auburn; Rudy Thies, Monona; Mrs. Herman Christofferson, Postville; Mrs. Edward Quamme, Waterloo; Mrs. Arthur Baade, Monona. Also one brother, Fritz Thies, Postville; and one sister, Mrs. Fred Wendt, Garnavillo. He also has two sisters and two brothers in Germany, besides other relatives and friends. Four of his children died in infancy, also one sister, Mrs. Henry Brandtman of Elkport, preceded him in death.

The funeral services were held from St. Paul's Lutheran church in this city at two o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E. Schmidt, and the large congregation present, as well as the many beautiful floral offerings, all were fitting testimonials of the high esteem in which deceased was held in the community which had known him for many years.
