B. S. Batchelder was born at Bridgewater, New Hampshire, Jan. 30, 1829, and died Sept. 1, 1913, aged 84 years, seven months and one day. He came to Iowa in 1856 and settled on a farm in Fairview township, Allamakee county, where he lived until he moved to Hardin in the spring of 1894. He was married to Miss Susan I. Gambell of Bermard, Vermont, March 16, 1858, who preceded him in death Jan. 7, 1872. To this union five children were born: Dana, Ben, Susie, Albert and Ruth. All preceded him in death excepting Susie, who was left to care for him in his last illness. On March 30, 1874, he again married to Mrs. Sarah M. Spaulding, who preceded him in death Feb. 6, 1905.
