Mary Elizabeth Starkey, the second daughter of John and Lorinda Starkey, was born at Clermont, Iowa, Aug. 19, 1860, and died at Postville, Iowa, Dec. 1, 1931, at the age of 71 years, three months and 12 days.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers. She is survived by one brother, W. R. Starkey, and his wife Ruth Starkey; by her brother-in-law, C. A. Ammons; by her niece, Mrs. Edna Simpson, and her husband, Bert Simpson; and by her nephew, Harvey Ammons.

When four years of age her parents moved to the family home in Clermont township, where she attended the Henderson Prairie school. In her early childhood she united with the Postville Congregational church, and at the organization of the Community Presbyterian church she became a charter member.

In 1901, when her sister, Mrs. C. A. Ammons, passed away leaving an infant son, seven days old, and a daughter six years old, Miss Starkey assumed the care of these children, and the remainder of her life was devoted to them and their father. All of her friends and acquaintances will cherish her memory as an example of wholehearted devotion. To those to whom she gave her services she took the place of mother and was as dear as their own mother could have been. Her religious life was one of simple and steadfast faith which she held until the end.

The funeral was held from the Community church in this city on Thursday afternoon last at two o'clock, Rev. R. F. Galloway officiating. Interment in the Postville cemetery.
