Ellen Marie (Nuehring) Thoma, 93, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Postville, Iowa, died Friday, April 26, 2013, at her home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

She was born May 29, 1919 on the family farm, south of Postville, the daughter of Edward and Hulda (Busacker) Nuehring. Ellen was baptized May 26, 1920 by the Rev. E. Schmidt and confirmed on March 20, 1932 by the Rev. R.B. Garten, all at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. She attended Larrabee School in Grand Meadow Township and graduated from Postville High School in 1937. Ellen attended the former Iowa State Teacher’s College. She taught several years in rural schools and Waterville School.

On November 12, 1949, Ellen and Leonard H. Thoma were united in marriage at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville by the Rev. F.R. Ludwig. Two sons were born to this union. They farmed on the family farm until 1959, when they moved to Postville. At this time, Ellen returned to teaching, having received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Upper Iowa University, and continued to do so until she retired in May of 1995 from MFL MarMac Community Schools.

Ellen touched many lives as she was a loving mother, dedicated teacher, always ready and willing to help. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and belonged to the Hannah Circle after retirement. Ellen was an avid reader and a flower lover.

Ellen is survived by her two sons, Lee A. (Linda) Thoma of Urbana and Russ ( Cathy) Thoma of Gurnee, Illinois; two grandchildren, Kristin (Dennis) Mahan of Phoenix, Arizona and Brian Thoma of Gurnee, Illinois; sisters-in-law, Darlene and Dorothy Nuehring, both of Postville; brother-in-law, Robert De Marr of Florida; nephews, Ronnie (Elaine) Nuehring of Miami, Florida, David (Nancy) Nuehring of Rockford, Illinois and Michael De Marr of Chicago, Illinois and nieces, Joyce (Changhe Ren) Nuehring of Postville, Shirley (Lowell) Lange of LeMars, Iowa and Linda (Chris) Johnstin of Chicago, Illinois.

Ellen was preceded in death by her husband Leonard; her parents; her sister, Eileen De Marr and her brothers, Elery, Eldred, Elliot and Alden “Jim” Nuehring.

Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 3, 2013 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa with a visitation at 10 a.m. until services. Rev. Steve Brackett will be officiating.

Burial will follow at the Postville Cemetery, Postville, Iowa.
