Dorleen Thornton

Dorleen M. Thornton, 84, of Waukon died Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 27 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted the family with arrangements.

Dorleen Marie Thornton was born March 24, 1929 in Postville to Charles and Abigail (Monroe) DeSotel. She attended school in Monona and graduated from Monona High School, where she played basketball.

September 13, 1953 she married Henry Gilbert Thornton at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Postville. They farmed together south of Rossville before moving to Waukon.

Dorleen was a homemaker and enjoyed baking, especially pies for her family and friends. She also liked going for walks, antiquing, going to movies, and going out to eat. She was known for always sending birthday cards to family and friends. She always had a comment and expressed them with her great sense of humor. Dorleen loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Miller of West Union and Judy (Jeff) Kimber of Decorah; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Pearl (Melvin) Martens of Indianola and her twin, Arleen (Jason) Ferguson of Monona; a sister-in-law, Darlene DeSotel of West Salem, WI; her step-children, Pauline LaVelle of Edgerton, WI, Carl (Joyce) Thornton of Waukon and Dorothy Thompson of Oceanside, CA; and numerous step-grandchildren.

Dorleen was preceded in death by her parents, Abby and Charles DeSotel; her husband, Henry, who died in 1972; her daughter, Jean Urell; a brother, Raymond DeSotel; twin great-granddaughters, Shayla and Shelby Cota; a son-in-law, Jay Halverson; and a step-daughter, Margaret Carter.

Honorary casketbearers were Tracy Stenson, Tina Christianson, Amy McCormick, Sarah Dicken and Angie Thornton. Casketbearers were Tyler Urell, Jeremy Halverson, Derek Thompson, Cody and Chase Heying, and Ron Ferguson.
