Charles Henry
After two years suffering with dropsy the death of Charles Henry took place last Wednesday evening at his home four miles northeast of this city. He was born in Germany and was aged 73 years and 5 months
.
The deceased lead an adventurous life in his younger days, his calling as a sailor taking him to many countries. In 1864 he came to this county and in 1866 was married to Miss Eve Rothermel. They settled on the farm in French Creek township now owned by John Short. About thirty years ago he bought from C.O. Howard the farm upon which he resided at the time of his death. To Mr. And Mrs. Henry were born ten children, one of whom died in infancy. They are, Mrs. Mary Gruber, Lansing; Charles, Jr., Mrs. Hannah Haas, Makee; Mrs. Mathilda Gruber, Union Prairie; Ella, Lansing; Andrew, John, Clara, and Joseph at home. He is also survived by eighteen grandchildren.Mr. Henry was an honorable, upright man, a good citizen and strictly honest in all his dealings with his fellow men. By hard work and prudent management he amassed a competency and was one of the most extensive landholders in the county. He owned 400 acres in Makee township, of which his son, Charles, now owns 160 and his sons, Andrew and John, 245. He also owned 320 acres near Luverne, Minn.
The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the home, Rev. Temple of this city officiating, and the body was laid to rest beside the deceased’s mother in the Engelhorn cemetery on Lansing Ridge.
