Maurice O’Regan Passes Away

The death of Maurice O’Regan, one of the early settlers of Union City township, took place at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, and came as a sad surprise to the numerous friends of the deceased. He had always been in good health. Lately he experienced some trouble from his stomach but the matter was not considered serious. At an early hour Monday he became dangerously sick and medical aid was at once summoned, but in spite of all that could be done he passed away the following afternoon.

Maurice O’Regan was born in County Limerick, Ireland, and was 71 years old at the time of his dearth. He came to America with his parents when nine years old and they settled at Ansonia, Conn. A few years later he moved to Dubuque and in October, 1859, he came to Allamakee county and settled on the farm on the banks of the Iowa river, on which he continued to reside until his death. It was then unbroken sod and his untiring energy transformed it into the beautiful home which he has left. On July 1, 1866, at Dorchester, he was married to Miss Mary Waters. She, with two sons, Maurice at home and James on an adjoining farm, and one daughter, Mrs. T. F. O’Brien of this city, survive to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent husband and father., A daughter, Nora, died thirty-six years ago.

The deceased was an honorable, upright man and during his long years of residence here made many friends, both in his own immediate neighborhood and in other parts of the county. He carried the stamp of his genial character in his countenance, and to meet him at once produced a desire for his friendship. His life was an open book and the righteousness of his example was productive of much good to his fellow men. He radiated good nature and kindliness and it was good to know him. The JOURNAL has been a weekly visitor in his home for thirty years and its proprietors feel that by his death they have lost a valued friend as well as patron., They extend their heartfelt sympathy to the mourning family.

Mr. O’Regan was a sincere and devout Catholic and died blessed and fortified by the rites of the Church, confident of a glorious resurrection and life everlasting. The funeral was held Thursday at St. Mary’s church, Lycurgus, and there was a large attendance. Rev. Father Brady of Dorchester, assisted by Father Campbell of Lycurgus, celebrated Requiem Mass and burial took place in the cemetery there.
