Funeral services for Ashley Ann Waterman, 7, of Postville were held Monday, October 28, 1996 at 11 a.m. at the St. Benedict Catholic church, Decorah. The Rev. Gary Krapfl officiated. Allan Sensor was organist and accompanied soloist Clark Goltz. Burial was in the church cemetery. French and Balik Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ashley Ann Waterman was born July 17, 1989 at Decorah to Andrew and Ada (Young) Waterman of Postville. She was a student at John Cline Elementary School, Decorah.

Ashley died October 22, 1996 at Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, WI, from injuries suffered in a car-school bus accident, 12125 Apple Road, Postville.

She is survived by her parents, Andrew and Ada, and sisters Annette and Alex, Postville. Grandparents, John and Patricia Waterman, Harpers Ferry and Robert and Betty Young, Dubuque, and great-grandparents Gladys Avenarius, Oshkosh, WI, and Nora Carner, Dubuque.

Pallbearers were John Young, Jr., Robert Young, Jeff Waterman and Randy Waterman.

Postville Area Residents Killed In Car-bus Collision Near Gunder

Lori Mae Soukup, 37, and Ashley Ann Waterman, 7, both of rural Postville, died as a result of a car-school bus collision Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident happened when Soukup pulled around a tractor and wagon parked near the road and pulled into the path of a westbound school bus. The accident happened on County Road B-60 at around 4:20 p.m.

The Valley CEW bus was driven by Donna Becker of Clermont. She was treated and released at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union.

Soukup, of rural Postville, was in the process of taking Ashley and her siblings, Alex and Annette home from school before going to work. Immediately prior to the accident, she had taken her daughter, Veronica to a friend's house.

The children, all of rural Postville, are open-enrolled in the Decorah School System and attend John Cline Elementary School. School officials said the Watermans and Soukups took turns driving the children to and from school.

Soukup is survived by her husband Leonard, daugthter Veronica and step-daughter, Nicole.

Ashley is survived by her parents, Andrew and Ada Waterman and siblings, Annette and Alex.
