WATERLOO - Bethel Daisie Swartz, 84, of Waterloo, died at home Thursday, May 4, from renal failure.
She was born Jan. 21, 1922, northeast of Monona, daughter of Walter G. and Daisie Surring Jenkins. She married Leonard A. "Sam" Swartz on June 5, 1943, at Grace Methodist Church, Waterloo. He died April 3, 1986.
She graduated from the Iowa Braille and Sight-Saving School in Vinton in 1940. She moved to Waterloo where she worked at Winter Dairy while attending Gates Business College, graduating in 1942. In 1956, Bethel became the switchboard operator at Davidson's Department Store. From 1967 until retirement she was a dictaphone transcriber with the Iowa Department of Human Services.
Survived by: two sons, Dennis J. Swartz of Clearwater Beach, Fla., and Ron D. Swartz of Waterloo; five daughters, Marsha Sewick, Marilyn Halley-Tarr, Janet Jones, Janice (Mike) Hartz and Crystal Hartmann, all of Waterloo; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: three sons-in-law, Wayne V. Sewick, PFC Russell L. Halley and Mike D. Jones; a grandson; and three brothers, Lyle, Delbert and Dayton Jenkins.
Private family graveside services: will take place at a later date in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. today at 1205 Wren Road, Waterloo. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, is assisting with arrangements.
Memorials: may be directed to the family or the Cedar Valley Hospice.
