Helen Mathewson - Mitchell was born near Edinburgh, Scotland, May 15, 1822, and died at her home in Postville, Iowa, May 22, 1905, aged 88 years and seven days.

She came to Ontario, Canada, with her parents when about 18 years of age. Was married to William Mitchell in Whitby, Canada, in the year 1850, and came with him to Postville, Iowa, in 1861, residing on a farm near here until 1893 when they moved to town. He died in 1895, but she and her daughter Margaret have continued to make this their home. She was the mother of five children, all of whom, save Helen, who died in 1883, are living and were with her at her death. She was a kind mother and a very devout church member. Before coming to Postville she was a member of the Presbyterian church, but since living here she joined the Congregational church and always manifested a very strong interest in the same. For the last 45 years of her life she has been an invalid, but bore her suffering patiently until released by death at midnight last monday. A good, true an noble christian mother in the fullness of years has gone to her reward: all can testify to her kind and charitable disposition, and many there are who sorrow that she is no more.

Those from a distance present at the funeral were - Wm. Mitchell and wife, of Ida Grove, Iowa; J. C. Mitchell and wife and Mrs. Elizabeth Mackey, of Trosky, Minn.; Mrs. Geo. Long and daughter, of Odebolt, Iowa; Mrs. Todd, of Waukon; Jas. Mickle and daughter, of Frankville.

The funeral was held from the home Thursday forenoon at 10:30 o'clock, conducted by her pastor, Rev. D. W. Blakely. Interment in the Postville cemetery.
