Mathias Sebastian, was born June 4, 1823, in Rhine Province, Germany, and died at his home three miles north of Postville, Feb. 19, 1905, aged 81 years, 8 months and 15 days.

He was married in 1865 to Mrs. Minnie Casten, who with three children and fifteen grandchildren now mourn the loss of a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Mr. Sebastian served his country as a soldier during the Civil War, being a member of Company A, 15th U.S. Inft. from which he received an honorable discharge in 1865. He was with Sherman in his famous march from "Atlanta to the sea", and actively participated in the battles of Buzzard Roost, Ressaca, New Hope Church, Kennesaw Mountain, Peach Tree Creek and Atlanta.

Deceased had been in poor health for the past year, and was taken seriously ill on Saturday morning last, and on Sunday afternoon his spirit took its flight beyond, where sickness and sorrow are felt and feared no more.

The funeral was held from the Lutheran church in this city Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Bockelmann officiating. Interment in Postville cemetery.
