Maria Brandt, nee Hartmann, was born November 16, 1839, at Husum, Hanover, Germany. In 1863 she was married to Gottlieb Brandt, who preceded her in death ten years ago. To this union were born thirteen children. In 1867 she came with her husband and two elder sons, Wilhelm and Gottlieb, to America and settled down first at Guttenberg. Two years later they moved to Garnavillo where they remained for six years and then removing to a farm in Grand Meadow township. Twenty-one years ago she came with her husband to near Postville. After the death of her husband the deceased moved to town, where she made her home. The last four months she stayed with her daughter, Mrs. Fred Meyer, near the Junction, where at seven o'clock a.m., Friday, Dec. 27, 1918, she passed away at the age of 79 years, 1 month and 11 days, death being due to influenza. She leaves to mourn her death the following children: Wilhelm Brandt of Postville; Gottlieb Brandt of Cherokee county; Mrs. Emma Minges of Wauzeka, Minn.; Ernst Brandt, near Clermont; Johann Brandt of Cresco; Mrs. Martha Schroeder, Castalia; Carl Brandt of Fort Atkinson; Mrs. Christine Behrens, Fort Atkinson; Mrs. Fred Meyer, near Postville Junction. Two sons and two daughters preceded her in death. She leaves also sixty grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
