Pete Gantenbein Dies after Brief Illness

Roland “Pete” Gantenbein, 77, of De Soto, Wis., died on Monday, April 2, in a Temple, Texas hospital after a brief illness.

Private memorial services were held on Tuesday, April 3.

His body was cremated, and the ashes will be brought to New Albin at the end of April for burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

He was born in New Albin in March of 1907, the son of Carver and Rose (Curti) Gantenbein. He was a retired salesman for the Hormel Packing Company. He also operated the Gantenbein Motor Inn (Ford dealership) in Lansing from 1948 to 1950.

For the past several years he and his wife had been spending the winter in Texas.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in De Soto, Wis. He and his wife, Barbara, made their home the past 30 years on the river north of Battle Island.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, David of Horse Cave, Kentucky and Glynn of Belton, Texas; two daughters, Marie Gantenbein of Houston, Texas and Ruth Metsa of Moline, Illinois; two brothers, Raymond Gantenbein of Green Bay, Wisconsin and Glen Gantenbein of Howard, South Dakota; two sisters, Dorothy Rogstad of La Crosse, Wisconsin and Judy Lager of New Albin. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
