Postville Review, Sat., 1 Aug. 1896.
DIED- At his home in Rock Valley, Iowa, July 24th, 1896, Arthur William Gordon, aged 35 years, 3 months and a few days.
Arthur Gordon was born in April, 1861, on Henderson Prairie, and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Gordon. During his entire life he lived on the farm and in Postville until about five years ago, when he went to Rock Valley to work at his trade, that of a tinner. Last February he married a young lady of that town, making a visit here immediately after his marriage, in company with his wife. It seems that he was taken ill about noon of Friday, though his illness was not considered serious. He had some symptoms of cholera morbus and a doctor was called and prescribed for him. Later he passed into a quiet sleep. At the end of two hours his wife aroused him to give him medicine and asked him how he felt. He remarked that he felt all right and sank back and almost immediately expired. An inquest and post mortem was held and the decision was that he died from cholera morbus. This was not satisfactory to the relatives and the stomach and other organs, which were removed, will probably be sent to Chicago for analysis.
Arthur was one of the very best young men that this country has ever produced . Affable, kind, honest and upright, he was a friend with all of whom he ever came in contact. Cut down in the bright morning of his life and usefulness, he leaves a broken hearted young wife and parents and brothers to mourn his untimely death, as well as a wide circle of acquaintances and sympathizing friends. The mystery of life and death are past finding out.
His mother and brother went to Rock Valley and brought the remains to Postville. The services were held from the Methodist church, Rev. Pollard officiating, on Sunday, the interment being in the Postville cemetery. The wife of the deceased remains here temporarily.
On the arrival of the remains they were taken in charge of the Knights of Pythias, and the funeral was conducted under their auspices, Mr. Gordon being a member of Olive Branch lodge.
