DIED- At his home in Grand Meadow township, on Sunday afternoon, July 26th, Jacob Leui, aged 76 years.
Mr. Leui came to his late home in Grand Meadow township in 1854, making his residence there 42 years, and consequently one of the oldest residents of that part of Clayton county. He was married three times and leaves a widow and seven children.
Mr. Leui had a reputation of Integrity and sterling worth. Industrious, frugal, a valued citizen and good man all his life, he laid a foundation of success broad and deep.
The funeral was held from the family residence Tuesday afternoon, the services conducted by Rev. Schumann of the Lutheran church. The chior from Postville assisted with the music in the English language. A large concourse of acquaintances and friends followed his remains to his final resting place in Grand Meadow cemetery.
HISTORICAL- Jacob Leui was born in Switzerland on May 1, 1820. He came to America in 1849 and lived in Cleveland, Ohio, until 1854, when he came to Clayton county and settled on section 14 in Grand Meadow township. On March 20, 1853, he married Persis Lathrop, who died less than one year later. On November 17, 1855, he married Susan Krater, a widow with one daughter, who is Mrs. Kate Starr, of Algona, Iowa. The wife was born in France, Oct., 1820, and died Feb. 24, 1861. Three children were born to them, William, Mary and Caroline. On Apr. 21, 1863, he was again married to Anna Heirigs. Of this union four children are living, John, Lizzie, Anna and Emma; and two dead, August and Louisa. He also leaves an aged sister, who resides at McGregor. His wife and all the children and grandchildren were present at his bedside at his death. He was a member of the German Lutheran church.
