Postville Review, Fri., 8 Jan. 1915. Slightly condensed.

Charles H. Flynn, M.D., son of Samuel and Melissa Ann Avery - Flynn, was born at Phoenix, New York, July 14, 1857. He received his early education in the common schools and the acadamy's of his native town. The summer he was eighteen years old he left home and spent two years learning the nursury business. He spent several years in different parts of the country following various vocations, teaching school four winters. He also spent several terms at the Michigan Agricultural College, Lansing, Mich. In 1883 he graduated from the veterinary department of Ames, Iowa, and followed the veterinary practice for several years.

On September 4, 1884, Dr. Flynn and Miss Christine Hodenfield of Clear Lake, Iowa, were married. To this union eleven children were born, five of whom died and six are living. Mrs. Flynn passed away on April 29, 1912, and Dr. Flynn died on Dec. 31, 1914.

In 1891 Dr. Flynn graduated from the Keokuk Medical College and practiced medicine until his final illness. He took post-graduate courses in Chicago and New York City. He was one of the best read physicians in northeast Iowa and enjoyed a wide and lucrative practice. Many people remember his faithful ministrations with sincere gratitude.

Dr. Flynn was a member of Brotherly Love Lodge No. 204 A.F.& A.M. and Unity Chapter No. 62 R.A.M. of Postville, of Langridge Commandery K.T. of West Union, and also of the Odd Fellows. Politically he has been mostly identified with the Republican party. He was formerly coroner of Winneshiek County one term. He was not identified with any of the churches, but he was a believer in the christian religion and expressed his faith in God in strong terms before his decease.

Late in the fall of 1898 Dr. Flynn located in Postville and this writer enjoyed a close acquaintance with him. Under a somewhat brusque exterior was a kind hearted, conscientious, sincere and friendly man. In the practice of his profession he measured his success not by the dollars he might acquire, but rather through research and study along medical and surgical lines fill his mind with useful knowledge that he might the better minister the afflictions of mankind; to him the triumph over the ills flesh is heir to was success. To rich and poor he ministered with equal fidelity, and in many homes throughout northeast Iowa there is sorrow that he is no more.

A loyal citizen, true friend, good neighbor and devoted father has laid life's burden down and entered into eternal rest in the summer land above, where sweet peace shall be his portion forevermore.

The funeral was from the home Saturday afternoon, Rev. J. F. Childress officiating, after which the body was conveyed by train to Decorah for interment by the side of the wife and children gone before.
