Postville Review, Fri. 30 June 1905.

Seldom has a community been more shocked and saddened by the death of one of its citizens than were the people of Postville on Tuesday morning by the announcement "Halvor Lien is dead." While in a measure our people have been prepared for such a report for some time past, the suddeness with which it came was a severe shock to all. He suffered a hemorrhage about two weeks ago which was a great strain on his already frail constitution, and after having recovered from its effects sufficiently he was daily driven to the home of his wife's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Prior, that he might have freer access to the open air, and under the benignant rays of the summer sun he seemed to grow stronger with each succeeding day. On Monday evening he was returned to his home as usual to spend the night, friends dropping in for an evening call and to them he talked cheerfully of feeling much better. Near nine o'clock, shortly after the last guest had departed, Halver began to prepare for bed, and while in the act of removing his footwear a hemorrhage came upon him and he fell to the floor, and in a few minutes time, without uttering a sound, poor Halver had passed away.

Halvor H. Lien was born on a farm a few miles east of Clermont, Iowa, July 17, 1859. He received a good high school education, and coming to Postville in 1886 entered the employ of F. W. Roberts. In 1890, he with Walter Brorby, bought the grocery business of Schultz & Welzel, and a year or two later bought out Mr. Brorby, since which time and until his death he had continually conducted the City Grocery.

He was married May 28, 1896, to Miss Fannie Prior of Postville, and died of a hemorrhage (next words absent) widow and two sons seven and three years old.

Deceased conducted his business on the soundest principals, and all his patrons (next words absent) making success doubly sure. He was a man of marked ability, a citizen whom all could respect, and possessed the confidence and esteem of all who knew him. His character was beyond reproach, his friendships warm and sincere. His convictions of right and wrong were his own, and shown in his daily life in an agreeable and pleasant manner. He was a member of the Norwegian Lutheran church. A loving husband and father has gone and many are in sorrow.

No man has ever occupied a higher or more esteemed place in the business and social circles of our city, or in the hearts of our people in general than did Halvor H. Lien, and that an entire community is bowed in grief at his passing speaks more eloquently than the high words of the high character of American citizenship his lifeworks portayed. The wife, children and relatives have the profound sympathy of all in their hour of sorrow.

The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at two o'clock from the home, Rev. Blakely conducting a brief service. Every business house and office in the city was closed during the funeral hour and many artisans rested from their labors to pay a last tribute of respect to the memory of one who was a friend to all. Interment in Postville cemetery.

The floral offerings were many and beautiful.

The following relatives from abroad were present: Samuel Lien, Manchester; Mrs. Martin Olson, Bloominton Prairie, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Muellenthaler, Elgin; Miss Mary Halverson and Emil Halverson, Gunder; Ever Lien, Farmersburg; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Griswold, cousins of Mrs. Lien, McGregor.
